    Your Latest Florida Weather Information

Hi everybody. Tropical storm Hanna is struggling to maintain TS status. In fact, the cyclone is beginning to look more like a subtropical system. The new model guidance is taking the system w NW with a decrease in forward speed. A weakness in the ridge is forecast at that point just east of the Bahamas. This weakness in the ridge is expected to allow the cyclone to break through and take a more northerly course. This is going to be one of those wait for the turn storms. This turn is being shown by most of the global models.

Gustav has weakenned slightly after crossing Cuba. The eye has filled in and a recon is flying out to the system to get an exact fix on the intensity. The model guidance is still the same with a beeline to the Louisiana coast.

I will have more on the track of Hanna in the morning as we see if the models still are showing the same general motion and track.

    Your Latest Florida Weather Information

Hi everybody. Gustav is now a strong cat 4 storm and will probably be a cat 5 at some point in it’s life. It is expected to weaken some as it approaches the Gulf Coast. Winds are now 145 mph and the track remains the same.

Hanna is undergoing changes today as she appears to be looking more like a sub-tropical storm rather then a tropical storm. The main difference is that a sub-tropical system has a cool core while a tropical storm has a warm core. They can still be quite strong. A subtropical storm can be compared to a Nor’easter up north.

The model spread on Hanna has become quite large with models looking like a tangled mess of wires. The new track is a best guess scenario and has her headed for Florida at the end of the forecast period. I want to caution that this track may or not hold in place so keep checking back the next few days.WE will be watching this storm quite a long time so it will be a wait and see. The track is uncannily similar to Jeanne in 2004.

Some of the models are forecasting a north turn very close to us towards the Carolinas as the ridge begins to weaken. The NHC basically said that forecasting this storm is like ‘Throwing darts”.Don’t panic because of the new forecast track but rather just stay tuned in. It would be prudent to check your hurricane supplies. It would be an excellent idea to fuel up all your vehicles and gas cans before Gustav hits the rigs in the Gulf and prices soar.

One of the biggest concerns of even a close brush with Hanna is the flood potential. We will keep you posted.

    Your Latest Florida Weather Information

Hi everybody. We are now looking another tropical storm on the horizon…Gustav. Gustav was born earlier today as a depression with only minimal winds. By 2 Pm, Gustav had blossomed into a 60 mph tropical storm. With the rapid intensification, we most certainly thought that this system would turn into a hurricane quite rapidly. It didn’t. In fact, after several flights through the storm, they have found a weaker and more ragged system. The speed is still held, however, at 60 mph.

Being that this weakening is most likely temporary, strengthening is still expected. Many of the global models are showing a track more to the left or west then the NHC track currently has it. The thinking is that a pressure ridge building over Florida, the cyclone will head towards the NW and then slow down it’s forward speed. At this point the system will be near Haiti. The cyclone is then forecast to bend toward the west and ride along the island of Cuba. This land interaction will ultimately cause a weakening of the system. After day 5, the track is still uncertain.

Several reliable global models actually show the system weakening. The reason for this is actually unknown and the NHC is not totally buying that scenario.

If the interaction with the anticyclone over Florida does as the models are showing, the system should stay to our south. Bear in mind there is still some uncertainty in this track but any scenario that shows a possible miss is a good thing. Another important feature is the fact that Gustav has become smaller in radii. This could be due to either weakening or due to re-organization.

We need to follow the track carefully and observe any changes. After the near catastrophic rains we had with Fay, another dose would certainly be of grave concern

    Hi: I just think Big Brown, is the greatest horse in my life time since Alysheba. Here is where he is scheduled to race his next race;

Big Brown appears headed to Monmouth Stakes

It looks as if Big Brown will be taking another ride down the Garden State Parkway.

IEAH Stables co-president Michael Iavarone said yesterday that the Kentucky Derby / Preakness winner probably will run Sept. 13 in a 1 1/8-mile turf stakes at Monmouth Park, where he won the 1 1/8-mile Haskell Invitational Aug. 3. It would be Big Brown’s first grass race since he dominated his career debut last year at Saratoga.

Iavarone said it was “75-25″ that Big Brown would race in the newly created Monmouth Stakes, with the 1 1/8-mile President’s Cup on grass the same day at Philadelphia Park having an outside chance. The Massapequa resident said the decision would be announced today.

If Big Brown goes to the Monmouth Stakes, its purse would be boosted from $200,000 to $500,000. To lure the 3-year-old superstar, Philadelphia Park management offered to raise the value of the President’s Cup from $250,000 to $1 million. Even so, IEAH is leaning toward returning to the Jersey Shore, mainly because Monmouth’s turf is in better condition.

“I’ve heard from various sources that we don’t want to run on the grass there [at Philadelphia Park],” Iavarone said. “Even though there’s a difference in money, I’d rather play it safe. I’d be very surprised if we don’t go to Monmouth.”

Pyro heads large Travers field. With Big Brown skipping Saturday’s $1-million Travers Stakes, a field of 12, the biggest since 13 ran in 1990, was entered for the 139th running of the 1 1/4-mile Midsummer Derby.

Macho Again will try to become the fourth consecutive horse to hit the Jim Dandy-Travers double, but he isn’t favored. Pyro, the Jim Dandy runner-up, is the 7-2 morning-line choice despite drawing post 11. Harlem Rocker (post 8) is listed at 4-1 and Macho Again (post 5) is 5-1.

Steve Asmussen trains Pyro, who again will be ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan. “We were disappointed he didn’t win the Jim Dandy, but it was a good effort,” Asmussen said. “We’re going to lead him over with confidence.”

Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara, last in the Jim Dandy after a speed duel, is part of trainer Nick Zito’s uncoupled three-horse entry along with Cool Coal Man and Amped. Also in are Triple Crown also-rans Tale of Ekati, Colonel John, Court Vision and Tres Borrachos.

Todd Pletcher trains Harlem Rocker, winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes on July 13 at Fort Erie in Canada. “I don’t think we’ve gotten to the bottom of him yet,” Pletcher said. “It looks like a pretty wide-open race.”

Court Vision, co-owned by IEAH and Winstar Farm, drew the outside post. “I’d like to exchange it if I can,” Iavarone said. “I think it adds to the challenge. The key is [Kent Desormeaux] is going to have to find a tuck-in position going into the first turn or we’ll be caught pretty wide.

“He’s a closer anyway, so if we can save some ground, we should be OK.”
